Weywot is an unusually dark body, with a geometric albedo of only about 0.024-0.078, far lower than its parent Quaoar's (about 0.124), a trait that may point to a captured origin rather than formation from shared collisional debris.
Its discovery was announced in 2006, and it was named in 2007 after Quaoar's son, a creator figure in Tongva mythology.
Stellar occultation observations show it follows a nearly circular orbit around Quaoar.
The most recent occultations (from 2023 onward) constrain its size to 116-172 km at 95 percent confidence.
