comet
The brightest comet of the decade in the northern hemisphere, in the summer of 2020.
Discovered by NASA's NEOWISE (formerly WISE) space telescope in March 2020.
It survived its close solar approach, a passage that destroys many smaller comets.
It won't return to the inner Solar System for roughly another 6,800 years.
Its nucleus is about 5 km across, unusually large among comets bright enough to see with the naked eye.
Within weeks of its discovery it became easily visible to the naked eye in the evening sky of the northern hemisphere.
