weather and climate satellite
A joint NASA and NOAA satellite; the daily images from its VIIRS instrument also feed this globe's live cloud layer.
Launched on October 28, 2011, as NPP, it was renamed in 2012 after meteorologist Verner E. Suomi, the 'father of satellite meteorology'.
Its five instruments (VIIRS, CrIS, ATMS, OMPS, CERES) collect data for weather forecasting and long-term climate monitoring.
It flies a sun-synchronous orbit at about 824 km, crossing the equator northbound at 1:30 p.m. local time.
According to NASA its data products will cease on November 1, 2026, with NOAA-20 and NOAA-21 taking over.
