Mars lander
The first lander of the Viking program, which worked on Chryse Planitia for more than six years.
It touched down on Chryse Planitia on July 20, 1976, at 11:53 UT (22.27° N, 312.05° E).
Transmission of the first surface image began 25 seconds after landing.
Two plutonium-238 radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) powered it, each providing 30 W of continuous power.
Its launch mass was 572 kg; its three footpads formed an equilateral triangle with 2.21 m sides.
Contact with it was lost on November 13, 1982.
