Deep Impact fired a projectile into it in 2005 to expose the pristine material below the surface.
Discovered by Wilhelm Tempel in 1867.
The Deep Impact collision created a crater roughly the size of a football field and about 30 meters deep.
In 2011 the Stardust-NExT mission also visited it to document changes since the impact.
Its nucleus is about 7.6x4.9 km, with layered structures visible on its surface.
Material ejected by the impact revealed water ice and organic compounds.
