space probe (NASA)
The first spacecraft to fly through the main asteroid belt and the first to visit Jupiter.
Launched on March 2, 1972, it became the first spacecraft to cross the asteroid belt, between July 1972 and February 1973.
On December 4, 1973 it passed within 130,354 km of Jupiter.
It carries an aluminum plaque showing a man and a woman, the Solar System and the location of the Sun relative to 14 pulsars.
It was the first spacecraft to use all-nuclear electrical power, from two SNAP-19 radioisotope generators.
Its last signal was received on January 23, 2003 from 12.23 billion km away; it will pass near Aldebaran in about two million years.
