comet probe (ESA, with NASA instruments)
The first spacecraft to orbit a comet, escorting 67P along its path around the Sun for two years.
Launched on March 2, 2004, it flew past Earth three times and Mars once on a ten-year journey to its target.
It arrived at comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on August 6, 2014.
Its Philae lander became the first craft to reach the surface of a comet nucleus, on November 12, 2014.
It carried three NASA instruments: the Alice ultraviolet spectrometer, the MIRO microwave instrument and the IES ion and electron sensor.
On September 30, 2016 it ended its mission with a controlled descent onto the comet, where it still rests on the nucleus.
