comet
The shortest orbital period of any known comet: it laps the Sun more than twenty times in a human lifetime.
It is named after German astronomer Johann Franz Encke, who calculated its orbit in 1819, though Pierre Méchain first discovered it in 1786.
It has one of the lowest known albedos (least reflective surfaces) of any comet.
It is thought to be the source of the November Taurid meteor shower.
Its orbit stays entirely within Jupiter's, unusually compact for a short-period comet.
Astronomers link at least one branch of the Taurid meteor shower to this comet.
