space probe (NASA/ESA/ASI)
It studied Saturn, its rings and moons for thirteen years and delivered the Huygens lander to Titan.
Launched on October 15, 1997, it gained speed from Venus (twice), Earth and Jupiter and entered orbit around Saturn on June 30, 2004.
The European Huygens probe it carried descended to Titan on January 14, 2005: the first landing in the outer Solar System.
It discovered water-ice geysers erupting from the south pole of Enceladus and mapped lakes and seas of hydrocarbons on Titan.
In its final phase, the Grand Finale, it dived 22 times through the gap between the planet and its innermost ring.
On September 15, 2017 it was deliberately steered into Saturn's atmosphere to avoid contaminating its potentially habitable moons.
