space probe
The first spacecraft to photograph Pluto up close (2015), later visiting the Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth (2019) as well.
Launched on January 19, 2006, it was the fastest spacecraft ever to launch directly from Earth.
In 2007 it used a Jupiter gravity assist to speed its journey toward Pluto.
After its 2015 Pluto flyby, in 2019 it also visited the Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth, the most distant object ever explored up close.
It carries a small portion of the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh, the discoverer of Pluto.
It remains operational, continuing to study the Kuiper Belt as it heads farther out of the Solar System.
