moon
Cassini found it from the telltale rippled edges of the Keeler Gap: its gravity keeps raising waves along the gap’s rim, which even cast shadows at Saturn’s equinox, when the Sun is in line with the ring plane.
Identified by the Cassini team on 1 May 2005, after ripples along the Keeler Gap's edge had already hinted at a moon's presence.
Known as a 'wavemaker moon': waves on the gap's inner edge lead the moon's orbit, while those on the outer edge trail it.
Its gravitational pull perturbs the orbits of particles in Saturn's A ring, sculpting the wavy edge of the Keeler Gap.
Named after Daphnis, a shepherd and pipe playing pastoral poet from Greek mythology, son of Hermes.
