near-Earth asteroid (101955 Bennu)
A carbon-rich rubble-pile asteroid; OSIRIS-REx sampled its surface in 2020 and brought the sample to Earth in 2023.
Discovered in 1999 by the LINEAR sky survey, with the provisional designation 1999 RQ36.
It is not a solid rock but a loose rubble pile held together by gravity, with a surprisingly boulder-strewn surface.
OSIRIS-REx studied it from December 2018 to May 2021 and collected a sample on October 20, 2020.
It is classed as a potentially hazardous asteroid: in the distant future (late 2100s) it has a small chance of hitting Earth.
