About the season

The championship came down to a three-way fight between Norris, Verstappen and Piastri at the Abu Dhabi finale, the first title decider since 2010 with more than two drivers still in genuine contention going into the last race. Lewis Hamilton's debut season at Ferrari became the low point of his career: for the first time ever he went an entire season without a podium, and he was the first Ferrari driver in 44 years to do so - a brief high point in China (a sprint pole and win) was followed by a disqualification in Las Vegas for excessive plank wear. At just 18, Kimi Antonelli stepped into Hamilton's seat at Mercedes as the team's first rookie in 70 years, Toto Wolff settled on him within minutes of Hamilton revealing his Ferrari move in January. On the 5,593rd day of his F1 career, Nico Hulkenberg drove from 19th on the grid to third in a chaotic, wet British Grand Prix to claim his first-ever podium, the longest wait for a maiden podium in the sport's history. McLaren wrapped up the Constructors' Championship as early as Singapore, but the season wasn't smooth sailing: both cars were disqualified in Las Vegas, and a botched strategy in Qatar cost the team a win and a podium, keeping the drivers' title fight alive all the way to the finale. Lando Norris won the 2025 Drivers' Championship with 423 points (McLaren), 2 points ahead of the runner-up. McLaren won the Constructors' Championship with 833 points, 364 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 24 completed races this season, there were 60 retirements. 4 different drivers won a race this season. Max Verstappen took the most race wins, 8 in total. Norris won the season-opening race, the Australian Grand Prix. The Australian Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 6 drivers failing to finish. The season's biggest upset win came from Piastri at the Miami Grand Prix, starting from grid position 4. The closest finish of the season came at the Canadian Grand Prix, with a gap of just 0.228 seconds. Hülkenberg made the biggest gain of the season at the British Grand Prix, from grid position 19 to finishing 3 (up 16 places). The most dominant win of the season came at the Mexico City Grand Prix, with a margin of 30.3 seconds. Verstappen won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
