He was also close to Esteban Ocon during their karting years, though their relationship soured over time, a friction that carried into their Formula One careers. Red Bull promoted him to partner Max Verstappen in 2019, but weak results, including being lapped repeatedly, saw him demoted back to Toro Rosso mid-season, replaced by Alexander Albon. Just months after that demotion, still in 2019, he scored a podium for Toro Rosso at the Brazilian Grand Prix. In 2020 he won his first Grand Prix at Monza, benefiting from a well-timed pit stop under a safety car, becoming the first French winner in Formula One since Olivier Panis in 1996. That win came less than a year after Hubert's fatal Formula 2 crash at that same Spa weekend, a loss Gasly felt personally. In 2023 he joined Alpine, where he was paired as teammate with his former rival Esteban Ocon. Pierre Gasly has been racing in Formula 1 since 2017 as a French driver. He scored a total of 499 championship points over his career. His best season was 2019, when he finished 7th in the championship with 95 points.
