About the season

Verstappen and Red Bull rewrote the record books: 19 wins from 22 races gave him an 86% win rate, beating Alberto Ascari's 1952 record of 75%, while a run of ten consecutive victories between Miami and Monza eclipsed Sebastian Vettel's nine-race streak from 2013. Formula 1 returned to Las Vegas after decades away, but the comeback's opening practice session was abandoned after just 19 minutes when a manhole cover's concrete surround failed and badly damaged Carlos Sainz's Ferrari, the incident was only settled years later, in 2025, when Liberty Media agreed a $3 million payout to roughly 32,000 affected fans. A scandal overshadowed Red Bull's winter: team principal Christian Horner faced an internal investigation over allegations of inappropriate behaviour, and was ultimately cleared just days before pre-season testing began in February 2024. Fernando Alonso's move from Alpine to Aston Martin paid off immediately, with six podiums in the first eight races of the season, though the team's development stalled in the second half, yielding only two more trophies the rest of the year. Max Verstappen won the 2023 Drivers' Championship with 575 points (Red Bull), 290 points ahead of the runner-up. Red Bull won the Constructors' Championship with 860 points, 451 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 22 completed races this season, there were 66 retirements. 3 different drivers won a race this season. Max Verstappen took the most race wins, 19 in total. Verstappen won the season-opening race, the Bahrain Grand Prix. The closest finish of the season came at the Australian Grand Prix, with a gap of just 0.179 seconds. Pérez made the biggest gain of the season at the Australian Grand Prix, from grid position 20 to finishing 5 (up 15 places). The Australian Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 8 drivers failing to finish. The season's biggest upset win came from Verstappen at the Miami Grand Prix, starting from grid position 9. The most dominant win of the season came at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with a margin of 33.7 seconds. Verstappen won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
