Photo: Yu Chu Chin · CC BY-SA 4.0As a child he moved from Shanghai to Sheffield, England to race in a more competitive karting scene, attending Westbourne School there. He was a Ferrari Driver Academy member from 2014, later switching to Alpine's academy from 2019, working as a test and development driver for Renault and Alpine along the way. He picked number 24 as his F1 racing number, a tribute to basketball idol Kobe Bryant. At the 2022 British Grand Prix he flipped upside down and slid into the barriers after colliding with George Russell, later saying the halo had saved his life. He left Sauber at the end of 2024 as the team prepared for its Audi rebrand, spent 2025 as Ferrari's reserve driver, then became Cadillac's reserve driver for 2026. Guanyu Zhou raced in Formula 1 from 2022 to 2024, across 3 seasons as a Chinese driver. He scored a total of 16 championship points over his career. His best season was 2022, when he finished 18th in the championship with 6 points.
