Senna and Prost collided at the first corner of Suzuka, the second year running the pair crashed at that exact spot - a move Senna later admitted was deliberate, which instantly settled the championship in his favor. Senna said the collision was payback for the previous year's Suzuka clash and for what he saw as FISA president Jean-Marie Balestre's favoritism toward Prost. It was Prost's first season at Ferrari after leaving McLaren, turning the McLaren-Honda versus Ferrari fight into a personal duel between two former teammates. The title was Senna's second, following his first in 1988. Ayrton Senna won the 1990 Drivers' Championship with 78 points (McLaren), 7 points ahead of the runner-up. McLaren won the Constructors' Championship with 121 points, 11 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 16 completed races this season, there were 215 retirements. 6 different drivers won a race this season. Ayrton Senna took the most race wins, 6 in total. Senna won the season-opening race, the United States Grand Prix. Bernard made the biggest gain of the season at the Monaco Grand Prix, from grid position 24 to finishing 6 (up 18 places). The Monaco Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 20 drivers failing to finish. The season's biggest upset win came from Prost at the Mexican Grand Prix, starting from grid position 13. The most dominant win of the season came at the British Grand Prix, with a margin of 39.1 seconds. The closest finish of the season came at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with a gap of just 0.288 seconds. Piquet won the Australian Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
