Tragedy defined the third round's weekend at Imola: Roland Ratzenberger died in Saturday qualifying when his car hit the wall at the Villeneuve corner at 225 km/h, and the next day Ayrton Senna crashed fatally at Tamburello while leading the race. In response, on safety grounds, the FIA banned electronic driver aids - active suspension, traction control, and ABS - starting that same season, aiming to shift emphasis back to driver skill. At the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim, Jos Verstappen's Benetton burst into flames during a pit stop after fuel sprayed onto the car due to a modified fuel-rig filter; he and the crew escaped with only minor burns, and the incident produced one of F1's most famous photographs. The title was decided in controversial fashion at the season finale in Adelaide, where Schumacher and Hill collided: Schumacher retired on the spot while Hill's damaged suspension forced him out too, handing Schumacher his first championship amid years of debate over whether the move was deliberate. Michael Schumacher won the 1994 Drivers' Championship with 92 points (Benetton), 1 point ahead of the runner-up. Williams won the Constructors' Championship with 118 points, 15 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 16 completed races this season, there were 223 retirements. 4 different drivers won a race this season. Michael Schumacher took the most race wins, 8 in total. Schumacher won the season-opening race, the Brazilian Grand Prix. The most dominant win of the season came at the Pacific Grand Prix, with a margin of 75.3 seconds. Gounon made the biggest gain of the season at the French Grand Prix, from grid position 26 to finishing 9 (up 17 places). The German Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 18 drivers failing to finish. The closest finish of the season came at the Portuguese Grand Prix, with a gap of just 0.603 seconds. Mansell won the Australian Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
