He was in strong form in 1997, sitting third in the championship after six rounds, until a high-speed crash at the Canadian Grand Prix broke both his legs, sidelining him for seven races. He made a remarkably swift recovery, returning for the last three races of that same season - a testament to his determination. He retired from Formula One in 2004 at age 37 and successfully transitioned into sports car racing; he was also respected as an outstanding test driver whose feedback impressed even Mika Häkkinen at McLaren. Olivier Panis made his Formula 1 debut in 1994 and raced until 2004, 10 seasons in total as a French driver. He scored a total of 76 championship points over his career.
