About the season

Michael Schumacher made his sensational F1 debut for Jordan at Spa-Francorchamps, stepping in for the jailed Bertrand Gachot - he qualified seventh before retiring on the opening lap with clutch failure. Williams introduced the FW14, combining Adrian Newey's aerodynamics with Frank Dernie's active-suspension system - the technical foundation for the team's crushing dominance the following year. Senna secured his third and final world title here, sealed in Japan, closing out the McLaren-Honda golden era. Ayrton Senna won the 1991 Drivers' Championship with 96 points (McLaren), 24 points ahead of the runner-up. McLaren won the Constructors' Championship with 139 points, 14 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 16 completed races this season, there were 210 retirements. 5 different drivers won a race this season. Ayrton Senna took the most race wins, 7 in total. Senna won the season-opening race, the United States Grand Prix. The United States Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 17 drivers failing to finish. Häkkinen made the biggest gain of the season at the San Marino Grand Prix, from grid position 25 to finishing 5 (up 20 places). The season's biggest upset win came from Piquet at the Canadian Grand Prix, starting from grid position 8. The most dominant win of the season came at the British Grand Prix, with a margin of 42.3 seconds. The closest finish of the season came at the Japanese Grand Prix, with a gap of just 0.344 seconds. Senna won the Australian Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
