In 1986 he frequently outpaced Ferrari's nominal lead driver, Michele Alboreto - commentators Murray Walker and James Hunt argued Ferrari had let go of the wrong driver when it signed Gerhard Berger instead. In 1987 at McLaren he partnered double world champion Alain Prost, but Ron Dennis viewed him only as a stop-gap while lining up Ayrton Senna - he memorably finished the German Grand Prix on three wheels after a late puncture. In 1997 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche WSC-95 alongside former Ferrari teammate Michele Alboreto and Dane Tom Kristensen - the first of what became Kristensen's record nine Le Mans wins. At the 1996 Toronto IndyCar race, an accident he was involved in killed fellow driver Jeff Krosnoff and marshal Gary Avrin. After retiring he ran successful Indy Lights teams, managed drivers including Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist, and also designs wristwatches. Stefan Johansson made his Formula 1 debut in 1983 and raced until 1991, 8 seasons in total as a Swedish driver. He scored a total of 88 championship points over his career.
