The season closed with one of Formula One's most dramatic finales: the title was decided at the very last round, in Mexico City. On lap 31, Lorenzo Bandini's Ferrari, chasing Graham Hill's BRM, made contact with his rival, spinning Hill into the barriers - a collision that effectively decided the championship. Ferrari then ordered its own driver Bandini to let teammate John Surtees through, so Surtees could finish high enough to clinch the title. Surtees thereby became the only man in history to win world championships on both two wheels (as a seven-time motorcycle champion) and four. John Surtees won the 1964 Drivers' Championship with 40 points (Ferrari), 1 point ahead of the runner-up. Ferrari won the Constructors' Championship with 45 points, 3 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 10 completed races this season, there were 99 retirements. 5 different drivers won a race this season. Jim Clark took the most race wins, 3 in total. Hill won the season-opening race, the Monaco Grand Prix. The Monaco Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 14 drivers failing to finish. The closest finish of the season came at the British Grand Prix, with a gap of just 2.800 seconds. The most dominant win of the season came at the German Grand Prix, with a margin of 75.6 seconds. The season's biggest upset win came from Bandini at the Austrian Grand Prix, starting from grid position 7. Maggs made the biggest gain of the season at the Austrian Grand Prix, from grid position 19 to finishing 4 (up 15 places). Gurney won the Mexican Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
