Interesting facts

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez sits 2,285 metres above sea level, the highest-altitude circuit on the calendar: the thin air means less aerodynamic drag (so higher top speeds), but also less downforce and less engine power, forcing teams to compensate with different wing setups. The circuit began life as a university thesis project by student Óscar Fernández in 1953, and opened on 20 November 1959 as the Autódromo Magdalena Mixhuca. It was later renamed for the Rodríguez brothers. Ricardo Rodríguez, only 20, died during practice for the non-championship 1962 Mexican Grand Prix when his Lotus's rear suspension failed at the fearsome Peraltada corner. His older brother Pedro died nine years later, in 1971, but not at this track, he was killed at the Norisring in Germany in a sports car race after a tyre failure. A 2002 CART race here drew 402,413 spectators, one of the largest live crowds in motorsport history, after the modern stadium section (Foro Sol) had been added. The 2015 Tilke-designed rebuild, timed for Formula 1's return, shortened the track and replaced the first half of the old banked Peraltada with a slower left-right combination, before cars rejoin the original curve partway through. The final corners run through the stands of an old baseball stadium, the Foro Sol, where the enclosed space bounces the engine noise back like an amphitheatre. You'll find it in Mexico City, Mexico. On the calendar since 1963, this circuit has hosted 25 races, the latest in 2025. Jim Clark took the inaugural win here in 1963. Lando Norris won here most recently, in 2025. The most successful driver at this circuit is Max Verstappen, with 5 wins. Red Bull is the dominant constructor at this circuit, with 5 wins. Valtteri Bottas set the fastest lap here, 1:17.774 (Mercedes, 2021).
