Mike Hawthorn won just a single race all season, but his consistency edged out compatriot Stirling Moss, who won four races, by a single point, making Hawthorn the first British World Champion. That same year, Vanwall claimed the first-ever Constructors' Championship for a British manufacturer, marking a clear shift of Formula One's center of gravity toward Britain. The season was also one of the sport's most tragic: Luigi Musso died at the French Grand Prix, his Ferrari teammate Peter Collins died at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, and Vanwall's Stuart Lewis-Evans crashed at the Moroccan Grand Prix, dying of his burns six days later in an English hospital. Hawthorn himself would die in a road accident near Guildford in January 1959, just months after winning his title. Mike Hawthorn won the 1958 Drivers' Championship with 42 points (Ferrari), 1 point ahead of the runner-up. Vanwall won the Constructors' Championship with 48 points, 8 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 11 completed races this season, there were 113 retirements. 6 different drivers won a race this season. Stirling Moss took the most race wins, 4 in total. Moss won the season-opening race, the Argentine Grand Prix. The season's biggest upset win came from Moss at the Argentine Grand Prix, starting from grid position 7. The closest finish of the season came at the Argentine Grand Prix, with a gap of just 2.700 seconds. Amick made the biggest gain of the season at the Indianapolis 500, from grid position 25 to finishing 2 (up 23 places). The Indianapolis 500 saw the most retirements of the season, with 20 drivers failing to finish. The most dominant win of the season came at the Portuguese Grand Prix, with a margin of 312.8 seconds. Moss won the Moroccan Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
