The season's defining moment came on August 4 at the Nürburgring: a planned wheel change went badly wrong, leaving the 46-year-old Fangio's Maserati almost a minute behind the Ferrari-Lancias. Fangio then clawed back a nearly 48-second deficit over 22 laps and passed the leading Ferrari on the very last lap, a comeback many still regard as the single greatest drive in Formula One history. The win secured Fangio's fifth World Championship, and it turned out to be the last grand prix victory of his career. Earlier that same season, on July 20 at the British Grand Prix (Aintree), Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks shared a Vanwall to score the first win for a British-built car in a World Championship race since 1923. Juan Fangio won the 1957 Drivers' Championship with 40 points (Maserati), 15 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 8 completed races this season, there were 77 retirements. 4 different drivers won a race this season. Juan Fangio took the most race wins, 4 in total. Fangio won the season-opening race, the Argentine Grand Prix. The season's biggest upset win came from Hanks at the Indianapolis 500, starting from grid position 13. Rathmann made the biggest gain of the season at the Indianapolis 500, from grid position 32 to finishing 2 (up 30 places). The Indianapolis 500 saw the most retirements of the season, with 16 drivers failing to finish. The closest finish of the season came at the German Grand Prix, with a gap of just 3.600 seconds. The most dominant win of the season came at the Pescara Grand Prix, with a margin of 193.9 seconds. Moss won the Italian Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
