Hanks finally won the Indianapolis 500 on his twelfth attempt, in 1957, driving a Salih Special - at the time, the most attempts anyone had needed before winning. He had already considered retiring after the 1956 race, but car owner George Salih talked him into one more entry - the decision that brought him his eventual win. Immediately after winning, while still in Victory Circle, he announced his retirement from racing. Sam Hanks made his Formula 1 debut in 1950 and raced until 1957, 8 seasons in total as an American driver. He scored a total of 20 championship points over his career.
