Mike Hawthorn won the 1958 Drivers' Championship for Ferrari - becoming the first British world champion - despite winning just a single race, edging out fellow Briton Stirling Moss by a single point, 42 to 41. The 1958 season turned tragic for the team: Luigi Musso died at the French Grand Prix on 6 July and teammate Peter Collins at the German Grand Prix on 3 August, both after their cars ran off and flipped. Collins' death hit his close friend Hawthorn so hard that he announced his retirement the moment he clinched the title; barely three months later, on 22 January 1959, Hawthorn himself died in a road accident. Jean Behra, signed by Ferrari for 1959, was sacked on the spot after punching team manager Romolo Tavoni in a post-race rage at the French Grand Prix; weeks later he was killed driving a Porsche at the AVUS circuit. Ferrari has been competing in Formula 1 since 1958 as an Italian team. Ferrari won the Constructors' Championship 16 times, in 1961, 1964, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008. The team scored a total of 11030 constructors' championship points.
