French · 1976–1996
Guy Ligier founded the company in 1968 and named every car with a 'JS' prefix in memory of his friend Jo Schlesser, who died at the 1968 French Grand Prix. The team debuted in Formula 1 in 1976 with the Matra V12-powered JS5, nicknamed the 'teapot' for its oversized airbox; its first race was the Brazilian Grand Prix, where Jacques Laffite retired. Gitanes cigarettes were the team's main backer, and Gérard Ducarouge was the chief designer. Laffite and Ligier claimed their first pole position at Monza in 1976. In 1977, Laffite won the Swedish Grand Prix for Ligier's maiden victory, and it became F1's first ever 'all-French' win, with a French driver, team and engine (only the Goodyear tires were American). The win came about after leader Mario Andretti was forced to pit with a fuel-metering problem just two laps from the finish. Ligier raced in Formula 1 from 1976 to 1996, across 21 seasons as a French team. The team scored a total of 388 constructors' championship points.
