Bruce McLaren, a former Cooper works driver who had won three Grands Prix and finished runner-up in the 1960 World Championship, founded his own team, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing, in 1963. The team made its Formula 1 debut at the 1966 Monaco Grand Prix with the M2B, though Bruce's race ended after nine laps with a terminal oil leak. The 1966 season was hampered by underpowered, unreliable engines - first a 3.0-litre Ford Indianapolis unit, then a Serenissima V8, neither of which proved competitive. For 1967 the plan was to switch to BRM V12 power, but delivery delays forced the team to start the season with a modified Formula 2 chassis running a 2.0-litre BRM V8 instead. McLaren has been competing in Formula 1 since 1968 as a British team. McLaren won the Constructors' Championship 10 times, in 1974, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1998, 2024, 2025. The team scored a total of 7965.5 constructors' championship points.
