The roots of today's Mercedes team lie in the Brawn GP takeover: on 16 November 2009 Daimler bought a 45.1% stake and Aabar Investments a 30% stake in the previous year's championship-winning team, which then continued as Mercedes GP Petronas. Ross Brawn stayed on as team principal after the takeover, while Mercedes' motorsport activities were still coordinated by Norbert Haug at the time, long before Toto Wolff's arrival. In 2010 Michael Schumacher returned to Formula One after a three-year absence to race for Mercedes alongside Nico Rosberg, with the team finishing fourth in the constructors' championship. In February 2011 Daimler and Aabar bought out the remaining 24.9% stake still held by team management, giving them full ownership of the outfit. Toto Wolff joined in January 2013 as executive director with a 30% stake, while Niki Lauda came in with 10% and the chairman's title, and Lewis Hamilton had already signed from McLaren in September 2012 for the 2013 season. Between 2014 and 2021 Mercedes won eight consecutive constructors' championships, producing seasons such as 2016, when it won 19 of 21 races and claimed 95.2% of all pole positions. The unbeaten run ended amid the controversial safety-car restart at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Mercedes has been competing in Formula 1 since 2010 as a German team. Mercedes won the Constructors' Championship 8 times, in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2026. The team scored a total of 8662.5 constructors' championship points.
