Raised mostly in Monaco and Ibiza, he is fluent in five languages - English, French, German, Italian and Spanish - and was Lewis Hamilton's karting teammate as a child around 2000, after his father set up a joint team for the two boys at CRG. In 2016 he won the first four races and built a 43-point lead over Hamilton, before the two collided at the Spanish Grand Prix; mid-season, Niki Lauda personally visited his home in Ibiza to help rebuild his confidence. Just five days after clinching the world title, he announced his retirement at the FIA prize-giving gala in Vienna, citing reaching the 'pinnacle' of his career, not wanting his driving skills to fade, and wanting more time with his family. After retiring he became a clean-tech investor and entrepreneur, launched the Greentech Festival in Berlin in 2019, and founded Rosberg X Racing in late 2020, which won the inaugural teams' championship in the all-electric Extreme E series. Nico Rosberg raced in Formula 1 from 2006 to 2016, across 11 seasons as a German driver. He won the World Championship once, in 2016. He scored a total of 1594.5 championship points over his career.
