The season introduced two rule changes that reshaped overtaking and strategy: the push-to-pass DRS wing and Pirelli as the sole tyre supplier. Vettel dominated almost unchallenged, finishing on 392 points, 122 clear of runner-up Jenson Button - the Red Bull RB7 was one of the most dominant cars of its era. The Canadian Grand Prix became the longest race in F1 history (4 hours 4 minutes) after officials red-flagged it for hours due to rain; Button fought from last place in the closing laps and passed Vettel on the final lap to win. The season showed how Pirelli's deliberately fast-degrading tyres added strategic uncertainty and extra pit stops to races. Sebastian Vettel won the 2011 Drivers' Championship with 392 points (Red Bull), 122 points ahead of the runner-up. Red Bull won the Constructors' Championship with 650 points, 153 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 19 completed races this season, there were 80 retirements. 5 different drivers won a race this season. Sebastian Vettel took the most race wins, 11 in total. Vettel won the season-opening race, the Australian Grand Prix. The most dominant win of the season came at the Australian Grand Prix, with a margin of 22.3 seconds. The closest finish of the season came at the Spanish Grand Prix, with a gap of just 0.630 seconds. The season's biggest upset win came from Button at the Canadian Grand Prix, starting from grid position 7. Schumacher made the biggest gain of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix, from grid position 24 to finishing 5 (up 19 places). The Italian Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 8 drivers failing to finish. Webber won the Brazilian Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
