The 2000 season ended Ferrari's 21-year title drought: Michael Schumacher's championship was Maranello's first since Jody Scheckter's triumph in 1979. At Monza, Schumacher broke down in tears during the press conference after his 41st career win matched Ayrton Senna's all-time record. At Spa, Mika Hakkinen produced one of the greatest overtakes in Formula 1 history, passing both Schumacher and backmarker Ricardo Zonta side by side at over 300 km/h, a move many still call the best in the sport's history. Mid-season, Schumacher stumbled through crashes at the A1-Ring and Hockenheim and lost ground to Hakkinen in Hungary and Belgium, before winning the final four races from pole and sealing the title with a decisive pit-stop battle at Suzuka. Michael Schumacher won the 2000 Drivers' Championship with 108 points (Ferrari), 19 points ahead of the runner-up. Ferrari won the Constructors' Championship with 170 points, 8 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 17 completed races this season, there were 154 retirements. 4 different drivers won a race this season. Michael Schumacher took the most race wins, 9 in total. Schumacher won the season-opening race, the Australian Grand Prix. The Australian Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 13 drivers failing to finish. The most dominant win of the season came at the Brazilian Grand Prix, with a margin of 39.9 seconds. The closest finish of the season came at the Canadian Grand Prix, with a gap of just 0.174 seconds. The season's biggest upset win came from Barrichello at the German Grand Prix, starting from grid position 18. Barrichello made the biggest gain of the season at the German Grand Prix, from grid position 18 to finishing 1 (up 17 places). Schumacher won the Malaysian Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
