Toyota announced its Formula One entry on 21 January 1999, choosing to build a full factory team from scratch rather than buying an existing outfit. The Cologne-based squad made its race debut at the 2002 Australian Grand Prix. Despite one of the largest budgets on the grid, Toyota never won a race in eight seasons, managing only 13 podium finishes. The team's best championship season was 2005, when it finished fourth in the Constructors' standings. Cologne prosecutors investigated Toyota after former Ferrari employees were found to have brought confidential Ferrari data into the team. Toyota withdrew from Formula One with immediate effect in November 2009, following its parent company's first-ever annual loss. Toyota raced in Formula 1 from 2002 to 2009, across 8 seasons as a Japanese team. The team scored a total of 278.5 constructors' championship points. The team's best season was 2005, when it finished 4th in the Constructors' Championship with 88 points.
