Brazilian · 1975–1982
The team was founded by brothers Wilson and Emerson Fittipaldi in late 1973, backed by the Brazilian sugar and alcohol cooperative Copersucar, the only Formula 1 team ever based in Brazil. Operating out of São Paulo, roughly 6,000 miles from the sport's British hub, the team was designed by Richard Divila (whose initial gave the FD01 chassis its name), with Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer supplying materials and wind-tunnel access. In 1976, reigning two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi shocked the F1 world by leaving McLaren to race for his brother's team. Logistical difficulties forced the team to relocate to Reading, England, in 1977. Its best result came with the ground-effect F5A: Emerson finished second at the 1978 Brazilian Grand Prix. In 1980 it bought the remains of the defunct Walter Wolf Racing before folding for good in early 1983, having entered 120 races for three podiums and no victories. Fittipaldi raced in Formula 1 from 1975 to 1982, across 8 seasons as a Brazilian team. The team scored a total of 44 constructors' championship points.
