Audi announced in August 2022, at the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, that it would enter Formula 1 with its own team and power unit under the 2026 regulations - the brand's first works F1 participation. The team is built on the Sauber operation in Hinwil, Switzerland, so Audi F1 is the heir to Sauber, to the earlier BMW Sauber years and to the seasons raced under the Alfa Romeo name. The power unit is developed in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany, where Audi Sport has its engine plant. In August 2024 Mattia Binotto became head of the Audi F1 project, and in 2025 Jonathan Wheatley arrived from Red Bull as team principal. The 2026 line-up is Nico Hulkenberg and Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, who won the 2024 Formula 2 championship. Audi has been competing in Formula 1 since 2026 as a German team. The team scored a total of 17 constructors' championship points. The team's best season was 2026, when it finished 8th in the Constructors' Championship with 17 points.
