The introduction of 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid power units marked F1's biggest technical revolution since 1988, and Mercedes adapted best, sweeping the season with 16 wins and 18 pole positions. At the Belgian Grand Prix, Hamilton and teammate Nico Rosberg collided at Les Combes, puncturing Hamilton's tyre and ending his race; Rosberg later admitted fault, but the incident poisoned the mood inside the Mercedes camp for months. At the Japanese Grand Prix, in wet conditions, Jules Bianchi's Marussia went off at Turn 7 and struck a recovery crane that was clearing Adrian Sutil's crashed car; Bianchi suffered severe head and spinal injuries. Hamilton only sealed his second title at the season-closing, double-points Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after Rosberg suffered a technical failure, finishing the year 67 points clear. Lewis Hamilton won the 2014 Drivers' Championship with 384 points (Mercedes), 67 points ahead of the runner-up. Mercedes won the Constructors' Championship with 701 points, 296 points ahead of the runner-up. Across 19 completed races this season, there were 86 retirements. 3 different drivers won a race this season. Lewis Hamilton took the most race wins, 11 in total. Rosberg won the season-opening race, the Australian Grand Prix. The closest finish of the season came at the Spanish Grand Prix, with a gap of just 0.636 seconds. The season's biggest upset win came from Ricciardo at the Canadian Grand Prix, starting from grid position 6. The Canadian Grand Prix saw the most retirements of the season, with 11 drivers failing to finish. The most dominant win of the season came at the British Grand Prix, with a margin of 30.1 seconds. Hamilton made the biggest gain of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, from grid position 22 to finishing 3 (up 19 places). Hamilton won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the season.
