On July 1, 1979, at the French Grand Prix in Dijon, he took pole and then won the race, marking the first pole position and first victory for a turbocharged car in F1 history. In 1980, a suspension failure at the Canadian Grand Prix caused a serious accident that broke his leg, undermining his 1981 season and ultimately contributing to his retirement. His engineering background proved crucial in helping him communicate effectively with Renault's engineers during the technology's unrefined early years. After his F1 career he became director of Peugeot Sport in 1994, leaving the role in 1995. Jean-Pierre Jabouille made his Formula 1 debut in 1975 and raced until 1981, 6 seasons in total as a French driver. He scored a total of 21 championship points over his career.
