British · 1973–1980
The team was founded in 1973 by American Don Nichols and based in Northampton, England; designer Tony Southgate had previously penned the BRM that won the 1972 Monaco Grand Prix. Peter Revson was killed by a suspension failure during practice for the 1974 South African Grand Prix, he was replaced by Tom Pryce. Tom Pryce himself died in a horrific accident at the 1977 South African Grand Prix, striking a marshal who was crossing the track carrying a fire extinguisher. The team's only victory came with Alan Jones at the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix. After that 1977 success the team fell apart: key staff and sponsor Franco Ambrosio left to found Arrows Racing, taking driver Riccardo Patrese with them; Shadow folded after the 1980 season. Shadow raced in Formula 1 from 1973 to 1980, across 7 seasons as a British team. The team scored a total of 58 constructors' championship points.
