British · 1973–1982
The team was founded by Mo Nunn (Morris Nunn), who also designed its cars in the early years; he later became a championship-winning team boss in American Champ Car racing with Alex Zanardi and Juan Pablo Montoya. Ensign entered Formula 1 in 1973 backed by pay-driver Rikky von Opel, the reigning British Formula 3 champion, and endured a difficult debut season. In 1975, Gijs van Lennep scored the team's first championship points with sixth place at the German Grand Prix. Chris Amon drove for Ensign in 1976, with a best finish of fifth in Spain alongside strong qualifying performances (third in Sweden, sixth in Britain). Clay Regazzoni raced for Ensign in 1977, scoring points with fifth-place finishes at both the Italian and United States Grands Prix. Across nine seasons in Formula 1, the small privateer outfit accumulated only 19 championship points and never reached the podium. Ensign raced in Formula 1 from 1973 to 1982, across 10 seasons as a British team. The team scored a total of 19 constructors' championship points.
