The Cooper Car Company was founded in December 1947 by Charles Cooper and his son John in Surbiton, Surrey, after the pair had already been building racers in the family garage since 1946. Cooper's first cars were 500cc Formula 3 machines powered by motorcycle-derived JAP engines, often improvised in postwar Britain by welding together the front ends of two Fiat Topolinos. Cooper pioneered the popularisation of the rear/mid-engine layout in single-seaters, with designer Owen Maddock's work helping establish what became the dominant chassis philosophy in racing. Jack Brabham won back-to-back Drivers' Championships with Cooper in 1959 and 1960, making them the first driver-team combination to win an F1 title with a rear-engined car, and Cooper also took the Constructors' Championship both years. Between 1950 and 1969, Cooper entered 129 Grand Prix, winning 16 races, 11 pole positions and 14 fastest laps. Cooper raced in Formula 1 from 1958 to 1962, across 2 seasons as a British team. The team scored a total of 31 constructors' championship points.
