Jack Brabham scored his final Formula 1 victory at the season-opening 1970 South African Grand Prix, then sold his stake in the team to Bernie Ecclestone at the end of that year. Gordon Murray became the team's chief designer in 1973, pioneering the use of wind-tunnel development to give Brabham a significant technical edge. After an Alfa Romeo-engined interlude, the team returned to Ford-Cosworth power in 1979 and introduced the ground-effect BT49. The BT49 featured innovations such as carbon-carbon brake discs and a hydropneumatic suspension system that let the team skirt the ride-height regulations. Nelson Piquet won his first World Championship in 1981 driving the BT49C - which incorporated Murray's hydropneumatic suspension - taking three race wins as the team finished second in the Constructors' Championship. Brabham-Ford's Formula 1 history ran from 1964 to 1979, 6 seasons in total as a British team. The team scored a total of 51 constructors' championship points.
