American · 1950–1959
Flaherty won the 1956 Indianapolis 500 from pole position, leading 127 of the 200 laps - a rare feat, winning Indy from the very front of the grid. Less than three months after his victory, he was severely injured in a racing crash, which kept him out of the 1957 race and prevented him from defending his title. Pat Flaherty made his Formula 1 debut in 1950 and raced until 1959, 6 seasons in total as an American driver. He scored a total of 8 championship points over his career.
