The Algarve International Circuit was designed by architect Ricardo Pina; construction broke ground in February 2008 and was completed in just eight months that October, at a cost of €195 million. Its defining trait is constant elevation change: steep downhill sections and right-handers just after the main straight give it a rollercoaster feel, often compared to the Nürburgring or Spa-Francorchamps. The circuit maintains two separate layouts: a 4.653 km Grand Prix configuration for Formula 1 and a 4.592 km motorcycling configuration for MotoGP, both homologated in October 2008. Formula 1's pandemic-reshuffled calendar brought the Portuguese Grand Prix here in both 2020 and 2021, the country's first round since 1996; Lewis Hamilton set the race lap record at the 2020 event. In 2022, Supersport 300 rider Victor Steeman was killed in a crash during a race at the circuit. The circuit is set to return to the F1 calendar in 2027-2028, taking the Dutch Grand Prix's slot. You'll find it in Portimão, Portugal. On the calendar since 2020, this circuit has hosted 2 races, the latest in 2021. Lewis Hamilton took the inaugural win here in 2020. Lewis Hamilton won here most recently, in 2021. The most successful driver at this circuit is Lewis Hamilton, with 2 wins. Mercedes is the dominant constructor at this circuit, with 2 wins. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap here, 1:18.750 (Mercedes, 2020).
