Interesting facts

The track opened on 18 November 1990 as TI Circuit Aida, 'TI' standing for Tanaka International; golf-course owner Hajime Tanaka originally financed it as an exclusive private circuit for wealthy enthusiasts. It hosted Formula 1's Pacific Grand Prix in both 1994 and 1995, and Michael Schumacher won both races during his early title-winning seasons. In 1994, Ayrton Senna's Williams set an unofficial qualifying lap faster than the official race lap record Schumacher posted in the Grand Prix itself. The race was dropped from the calendar mainly because of the circuit's remote location. In 1999, reigning JGTC GT300 champion Shingo Tachi died during a Toyota Supra test session after a technical failure left him unable to slow for the first corner, the series' first driver fatality. The circuit came close to bankruptcy in 2004, when Unimat Corporation stepped in to save and buy it; since 2012 it has belonged to auto-parts maker Aska Corporation, and it was renamed Okayama International Circuit in 2005. You'll find it in Okayama, Japan. On the calendar since 1994, this circuit has hosted 2 races, the latest in 1995. Michael Schumacher took the inaugural win here in 1994. Michael Schumacher won here most recently, in 1995. The most successful driver at this circuit is Michael Schumacher, with 2 wins. Benetton is the dominant constructor at this circuit, with 2 wins.
