Interesting facts

Designed by Alan Bunting, the track broke ground in 1960 and opened in June 1961 at a cost of around $500,000, making it Canada's second purpose-built road racing circuit after Westwood in British Columbia. The name is a portmanteau of 'Motor Sport,' which later caused confusion once Turns 5a-5b were also named after Stirling Moss. The circuit's first major race, the Player's 200 on 25 June 1961, was won by Stirling Moss himself in a Lotus 19. The famous Moss Corner (Turns 5a-5b) exists because of him: what was originally planned as a single hairpin was split into two corners at his suggestion, to make it harder for drivers and more interesting to watch. The Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport Park mostly from 1961 to 1977, with a few gaps, before the race moved permanently to Montreal in 1977; Jackie Stewart (1971, 1972) and James Hunt (1976) both won Formula 1 races there. German Formula 1 driver Manfred Winkelhock was killed there in 1985 when his Porsche 962C crashed into a concrete wall during an endurance race. Canadian Motorsports Ventures bought the facility in 2011, and a sponsorship deal saw it renamed Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in 2012. The circuit is located in Ontario, Canada. Formula 1 has raced here since 1967, with 8 races held so far, most recently in 1977. The first race here was won by Jack Brabham, in 1967. The most recent winner here was Jody Scheckter, in 1977. Jackie Stewart has won here more than anyone else, 2 times. Among constructors, McLaren has been the most successful here, with 3 wins.
