It's the slowest and narrowest track on the calendar, yet also the most prestigious: the first race was the brainchild of Antony Noghès, president of the Automobile Club de Monaco, held in 1929 and won by William Grover-Williams in a Bugatti. Some sections between the start/finish straight and the Casino are barely wider than an ordinary city street, hemmed in by buildings and barriers that punish the smallest mistake instantly. The Piscine (swimming pool) section after the harbourside tunnel was added in 1973; inside the tunnel drivers burst from near-total darkness back into daylight in a fraction of a second, while the car can lose 20 to 30 percent of its downforce because of the tunnel's unusual airflow. The chaotic, weather-hit 1996 race became one of Formula 1's most famous 'mad' races: only three cars made it to the finish, and the unfancied Olivier Panis scored a shock win for Ligier, the only Formula 1 victory of his career. In 2006, Michael Schumacher appeared to deliberately stop his car at the Rascasse corner during qualifying to bring out yellow flags and prevent Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber from improving their times; the manoeuvre was spotted and he was sent to the back of the grid. In 2014 Nico Rosberg reversed back onto the track at Mirabeau during qualifying after botching his lap; the yellow flags it triggered killed teammate Lewis Hamilton's own flying lap at the worst possible moment, sparking a years-long trust crisis between them known as 'Mirabeaugate.' Ayrton Senna won here six times, first in 1987 and then five years running from 1989 to 1993, a record that still stands unmatched at this track. You'll find it in Monte Carlo, Monaco. On the calendar since 1950, this circuit has hosted 72 races, the latest in 2026. Juan Fangio took the inaugural win here in 1950. Andrea Kimi Antonelli won here most recently, in 2026. The most successful driver at this circuit is Ayrton Senna, with 6 wins. McLaren is the dominant constructor at this circuit, with 16 wins. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap here, 1:12.909 (Mercedes, 2021). The highest speed measured over a race weekend here was 290 km/h.
