In 2008 this tight street circuit hosted Formula 1's first-ever night race, run under floodlights bright enough to mimic daylight, a first for Asia too. Designed by KBR based on an earlier Hermann Tilke concept, it opened in August 2008, just over a year after groundbreaking. Since that debut, Singapore's night-time backdrop, skyscrapers, the Marina Bay Sands and the lit-up waterfront, has made it one of the most photogenic races on the calendar; Lewis Hamilton has said the heat, humidity and bumpy surface make it 'twice as hard' as Monaco. The 2008 race produced one of Formula 1's biggest scandals: on Renault's orders, Nelson Piquet Jr. deliberately crashed to trigger a safety car that let teammate Fernando Alonso win from 15th on the grid. The fix only came to light a year later; team boss Flavio Briatore received a lifetime ban (later overturned by a French court, and he returned to F1 with Alpine in 2024). The layout has been reworked several times: the contentious 'Singapore Sling' chicane disappeared in 2013, and in 2023 the technical 'Float' section was replaced with a straight, cutting roughly 20 seconds off lap times. Every Singapore Grand Prix through 2023 required at least one safety car deployment, a streak that was only broken in 2024. You'll find it in Marina Bay, Singapore. On the calendar since 2008, this circuit has hosted 16 races, the latest in 2025. Fernando Alonso took the inaugural win here in 2008. George Russell won here most recently, in 2025. The most successful driver at this circuit is Sebastian Vettel, with 5 wins. Mercedes is the dominant constructor at this circuit, with 5 wins. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap here, 1:33.808 (Ferrari, 2025). This is a night race, held under floodlights.
