It replaces Barcelona-Catalunya, the Spanish Grand Prix's home since 1991; organisers cited criticisms of the spectator experience, accessibility and lack of overtaking, and Madrid's annual fee is reported to be nearly double what Barcelona paid. The venue also revives Madrid's Formula 1 history: the city-linked Jarama circuit last hosted the Spanish Grand Prix back in 1981. The name 'Madring' is a portmanteau of 'Madrid' and 'ring,' a deliberate echo of the Nürburgring and Hungaroring. The signature corner, 'La Monumental,' is a 550-metre turn banked at roughly 13.5 degrees (about 24% gradient), the steepest angle allowed under current design rules. Tight, street-style sections and two short tunnels lead into a fast, permanent-circuit-style stretch; the venue also boasts Formula 1's first covered pit lane. The project stirred political controversy in Spain, with opposition politicians criticising the spending by IFEMA, the majority state-owned organiser, and the years-long payback horizon. After the inaugural 2026 race, drivers already criticised the lack of overtaking opportunities, prompting organisers to announce planned modifications. The circuit is located in Madrid, Spain. Only one Formula 1 race has been held here so far, in 2026, won by Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The lap record here is held by George Russell, at 1:35.587 (Mercedes, 2026). The recorded top speed at this circuit is 337 km/h.
