Interesting facts

From 1976 to 1983 this tight Californian street circuit hosted the United States Grand Prix West, nicknamed America's answer to Monaco thanks to its long Ocean Boulevard straight. The race was the brainchild of Chris Pook, an English-born travel agent who wanted to bring a Monaco-style street race to the declining port city, the project doubled as urban renewal. Before becoming a world championship Formula 1 round in 1976, the circuit debuted in 1975 with a non-championship Formula 5000 race that drew a crowd of 30,000, a strong enough showing to convince organisers it was worth stepping up to Formula 1. After eight Formula 1 races, rising costs pushed the organisers to switch to IndyCar instead, and F1 never returned. The 1977 race was won by local hero Mario Andretti, the Italian-American driving a Lotus, who remains the only American driver ever to win a Formula 1 race on home soil. In 1979 Gilles Villeneuve dominated in his Ferrari, taking pole, fastest lap and the win in one weekend, with teammate Jody Scheckter second for a Ferrari one-two; the venue didn't disappear, since 1984 the Long Beach Grand Prix has been one of the IndyCar Series' biggest races. The circuit is located in California, United States. Formula 1 has raced here since 1976, with 8 races held so far, most recently in 1983. The first race here was won by Clay Regazzoni, in 1976. The most recent winner here was John Watson, in 1983. Among constructors, Ferrari has been the most successful here, with 3 wins.
